Desperately Seeking Alexander the Great.
The EU and Greece have tied themselves up in an insoluble Gordian Knot. No one can untangle it without fear and loathing all around: fear of damage and loathing for one another.
The better course would have been to simply and publicly admit what everyone otherwise knows: game over; start over.
Instead the EU and Greece got Alexander the Tsipras.
The Gang That Couldn’t Shoot Straight
Greece, a country of divers, is stuck deep under water. They called to the Greed Gods for salvation.
Alexander the Tsipras came along and said he could save them. So the Greeks listened to his Siren song and…. And look what happened.
Alexander the Tsipras set out to wield his sword to cut the Gordian knot. Alexander the Tsipras sold the Greeks a bill of goods: he knew how to solve the intractable problem of living beyond their means and finding the money to pay for it. He promised that at one stroke he would free Greece from all its debts to its partners – and – then get from the same partners new monies for a Keynsian Stimulus Program.
Instead, Alexander the Tsipras missed and cut Greece’s lifeline needed to survive while underwater!
So, where is the real Alexander when Europe needs him now?
